New Zealand - 2004-12-15 - 1 - Wellington - Te Papa - National Museum
Wellington is the first city in New Zealand that I ended up staying at
2 times. I also ended up visiting the Te Papa museum 3 times (and there
are still parts of it I didn't get to). The museum is called "Our Place"
& is a point of pride in New Zealand. It is very well laid out & has some
constantly changing exhibits. Today's first pictures were of the outside
of the museum. After that I went to Quake Braker exhibit which is actually
outside the building. These quake brakers acts a shock absorber for earth
quakes. So basically the museum sits on these plastic rollers which allow
the entire building to move a little as one piece. This keeps it from
breaking up due to pressure. They say that on average Wellington has one
earthquake per week (although you almost never feel it). After that I
went to see things like Maori carvings, the x-ray room (skeletons), old
cannons & the skeleton of the legendary NZ race horse (Phar Lap). There
is also outside exhibits the show you lots of things from nature in a
very small space. There are plants, volcanic rocks, & the different layers
of the earth at different points in history.
