New Zealand - 2004-12-16 - Wellington - Te Papa - National Museum
Wellington is the first city in New Zealand that I ended up staying at
2 times. I also ended up visiting the Te Papa museum 3 times (and there
are still parts of it I didn't get to). The museum is called "Our Place"
& is a point of pride in New Zealand. It is very well laid out & has some
constantly changing exhibits. Today's main focus was the New Zealand in
the 70's exhibit which I found very interesting. I also saw several art
& Maori history exhibits. The second picture in on the second row (of
red & black flag), is about an event called Baston point. This was where
several thousand Maori people had to be forcibly removed from their land
by the government. I watched a 20 minute video on this, it was pretty
interesting. The land was never developed & I think in the end the government
ended up giving the people like 3 million dollars & use of the land anyway.
