Australia - 2005-01-07 - Botany Bay National Park - Trekking (Page 1)
The first 2 pictures on the first page are pictures from just outside
the apartment in Cronulla. It was a really beautiful morning & the water
was shimmering. We took the bus to Kurnell from Cronulla, which is where
Botany Bay Park is located. Botany Bay National Park is very historically
significant because it is where Captain Cook made his landing on April
28, 1770. The first part of Botany Bay is the monument track which has
monuments for the important people of the mission & the point where he
landed. There is also a history center which details a lot about the events
that happened while they were in Australia for the first 8 days before
sailing back to England. The bushwalk & the coastal walking track were
surprisingly nice as we hadn't heard a lot about them. The bushwalk gave
me the opportunity to see my first bark shedding trees. In Australia the
trees loose there bark & keep there leaves. Trust me it is really weird
to see when you are used things happening the other way around :) We also
seen parts of the park which appear to have been burnt. This is ok though
because Australia uses this method to revitalize the bush. There are even
certain trees that don't drop their seeds until after a fire. The coastal
walk is to take about 2 hours & then you return for another 2 hours &
catch a bus back to Cronulla. However, we decided that when we got to
a certain point that we were just going to walk all the way back to the
apartment. The coastal part of the walk ended up being 3 parts. The first
one was through the bush, which we expected. After getting to the lighthouse
& the end of the trail we went down to the coast. Here we walked (sometimes
jumped) from rock to rock. After a while rock hopping we got to the beach
& walked the rest of the way back on the sand. By the time we got back
we were exhausted. Walking in the sand as much as we did after doing the
rest of the walk really takes your energy. However, it was a really cool
walk & we saw some really cool scenery & sites.
