Australia - 2005-04-21 - 1 - West MacDonnell National Park - Redbank Gorge Walk & Swim (Page 1)
The night's sleep was a good one. It was a bit unusual because I had the
entire truck to myself, as Adrian had decided to sleep outside. Also the
night before I had taken my first shower with our portable shower, which
did not work that well. However, I can say that it did help me feel refreshed
though. We slept with the park at the Redbank Gorge camp sites. They were
not that great, but did have a drop toilet, bbq & picnic table. They also
had tons of ants & other animals that bit us, leaving marks. Anyway after
working on the laptop for a while I had went to sleep & slept rather well.
The next morning we got everything packed up & headed to the Redbank Gorge
walk. The first 5 minutes of the walk is not that great, but soon you
see the red cliffs of the beautiful gorge & understand the appropriate
naming. You walk along a dry creek bed for a good part of the walk. I
had chosen to wear my sandals because the signs said that there was a
swim at the end of the gorge. The walking was not very well suited to
this, but luckily it was not a very long walk. The first page of pictures
are all of the walk there. The third picture on the second page shows
Adrian at the swimming hole. If you look closely in the background you
can see that there is an opening where the 2 cliffs meet. Adrian & I explored
back into there about 200 meters. We had to do a combination of rock climbing,
swimming & walking to get back further, but the views were really cool.
The bad part was that I couldn't take my camera back there because at
parts you were completely underwater. The colors there were varied, where
the rest of the walk had been all red. After exploring that for a while
we came back out to the main pool & swam there for a little while before
going back to the 4WD. Redbank was my second favorite part of the park.
