Australia - 2005-04-26 - 1 - Nitmiluk National Park - Edith Falls Leliyn Loop Walk (Page 1)
The previous night after going to Katherine Gorge we had went back to
Katherine to try to find the caravan park that Lonely Planet recommended,
but it took us about 20 minutes to find it & the price was really expensive
when we did. So we decided since we wanted to go to Edith Falls the next
day before heading West we would just go camp there as well. It caused
us to drive for about an hour in the dark, but we eventually made it there
ok. The campground was nice & we made Mexican. After that I worked on
the computer for a little while & called it a night. The next morning
we got up early to go to the falls. The first part of the walk was nice,
but nothing spectacular. However, once we got to the upper falls the fun
began. We first rock climbed above the falls on the left side of the falls,
then came back down the other side. I actually slipped on the way down
& fell in the water, but I was not injured at all because I was close
to the water & basically just slid in. My weak right ankle gave out, I
was only in my swim trunks so nothing got wet that was important. We looked
around a little more then started looking for places to rock jump from.
We found that we could go off the rocks to the right of the falls. We
did our tests & worked our way up to the highest point on the rock. It
was so great to jump from there & the water was really deep where the
waterfall had carved out the rock. It was a tough climb to make it there,
but it was so worth it. Adrian jumped more than I did from there, but
I think I did 4 or 5 jumps. The last full row of pictures on the first
page show the place we jumped from. The fourth picture from the left is
Adrian's favorite picture. It shows him in flight towards the water. After
that we chilled out in the waterfalls, allowing the water to give us a
natural massage (very nice). Then lastly I tried to get under the waterfall,
where you could then look back out. It was tough but eventually I accomplished
it with a little coaching from Adrian on where to go. It was such an incredible
place, we spent quite a while there, but it was totally worth it. We then
continued on with the rest of the walk going by the lower falls & pool
on our way back to the campground. It was a nice walk, but the highlight
of it was for sure the upper falls.
