Australia - 2005-04-30 - 5 - Karijini National Park - Fortescue Falls Walk (Page 1)
After being denied in our quest for a swimming hole at circular pools
we headed toward the Fortescue Falls. The third picture of the first page
shows the effects of the water bleaching the rocks it runs over during
rains. When you are higher up you look out over the valley & would not
expect to see much green, but when you get down by the river you see grasses
& shrubs & it evens looks subtropical at points. The walk to the falls
is not really drawn out for you. We just really went where other people
went, sometimes crossing the stream, sometimes back tracking when we got
stuck. It is a walk where you need to take your shoes off at points of
get wet feet. But it was a really beautiful walk. The first view you get
of the picturesque falls is during the last third of the second page.
Like a lot of the falls in the Kimberly they were stepped which makes
for beautiful pictures. We were able to achieve our swimming objective
as there was a decent sized area at the base of the falls. It was quite
slippery to get into this area but it worked well. We did not find much
of a place to cliff jump because it was not deep enough. We did walk in
the falls & even found a place to have a waterfall massage which was great.
After the break we got dried off & headed up the steep walk out of the
valley. The last few pictures of the third page show the view back down
into the valley from the climb.
