Australia - 2005-06-09 - 2 - The Kimberly - Barnett River Gorge (Page 1)
Barnett River Gorge was an interesting trip & the highlight of the day.
It is nice & close to the "main" road only 3k off it. We end up parking
a little short of the end though because we did not want to take the truck
through the rocks afraid for the damage it may do to the already fragile
tires or even frame. We had enough issues without trying for more. Anyway
we parked & then started walking by the river which is where we thought
there was a path. At one point the river dried up & we stuck in the bed.
But later it more less ended & we were walking in the bush, which was
tough, with no real path. At a certain point we were able to get back
in the river bed & it came out to a road. We had did a short cut, but
still had more walking to do to get to the path start. Picture #9 of the
big tree is where the path starts in my mind. From there is a lower &
upper path. At first we did the lower path which is where we saw pictures
10-17. The view down by the river was very nice, looked almost tropical
which is interesting after coming from dust, rocks & an empty riverbed.
Even within a mile there is so much diversity in Australia. When we got
down there we met a nice Aussie couple fishing. They told us that we had
to go back to where we started & take the upper path to see the most stuff,
but told us it was worth it. So we did this & the rest of the pictures
are from that point on. We were basically walking at the rim of the east
side of the gorge. There was a marked path up there which was a little
tough to follow at points, but that helped quite a bit. The pictures from
the upper path continue onto the second page. On the second page, starting
with the second row are the pictures we took after we went down the side
of the gorge to get down by the river. Where we are pictured is where
we went for a little swim, but it was more of a floating experience than
a swimming one. There were not that many people at Barnett River Gorge
which was nice. The last few pictures on the second page & rest of the
third page are of the walk back to the truck. The Barnett River Gorge
was very diverse & beautiful, plus a unique walk compared to the other
gorges we went to at points.
